Patrol Operations
Patrol Operations consists of two patrol squads that are broken down to six patrol shifts. Each squad consists of a day shift, evening shift, and midnight shift. A second lieutenant and two sergeants supervise each shift. The shifts are staffed with field deputies who are assigned to 15 patrol sectors.
The Field Training Officer (FTO) Program exists within the Patrol Division. A second lieutenant and a sergeant head it. The training officers are assigned to various shifts and are charged with training new personnel in all facets of the Sheriff's Office, and patrol procedures and safety. The FTO program consists of 12 weeks of on the job training, after graduation from the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy, or other certified training academy.
