Certificate of Assumed or Fictitious Name Filings

NOTICE: Effective January 1, 2020, the Clerk of the Circuit Court will no longer accept Certificate of Assumed or Fictitious Business Name (CC-1050) filings. 

Pursuant to Virginia Code § 59.1-74, starting January 1, 2020, Certificates of Assumed or Fictitious Name shall be filed in the office of the clerk of the State Corporation Commission. Please contact the State Corporation Commission directly for further information. 

The Clerk of the Circuit Court will continue accepting filing of cancellations for the certificates previously registered with our office.

Filing Process & Fees

Before business entity (corporation, limited liability company, partnership) already formed or registered with State Corporation Commission conducts any business under an assumed or fictitious name (sometimes referred to as "trade name," "dba") in Loudoun County, Certificate of Assumed or Fictitious Name (CC-1050) must be filed with the Clerk of the Circuit Court (Virginia Code § 59.1-69).

Individuals who are operating as sole proprietors are only required to register their Assumed or Fictitious Name Certificate with the Clerk of the Circuit Court.

Step One

Complete certificate form here. Public terminals are available to complete the form at the Clerk's Office. Form must list business entity legal name exactly as it is formed/registered with the State Corporation Commission. Instructions for completing certificate form are available here.

Step Two

File Certificate with the Clerk's Office; directions on mailing in or filing in person outlined on the second page of certificate form.

  • Fees: Filing fee is $10 (payable by check, cash or credit card). Certified copies are available for additional charge: $2.50 for 1-page certified document (add $.50 for each additional page).

Step Three: (Corporation, Limited Liability Company, & Limited Partnership Only)

File certified copy obtained from the Clerk's Office with the State Corporation Commission. More information available on their website.
