Volunteering at Claude Moore Park

Claude Moore Park welcomes volunteers eager to share their love of nature and history with others. A variety of opportunities for volunteering include:

Friends of Claude Moore Park

The "Friends" are the park's advisory board. These are local residents interested in different aspects of the park, including nature, history and recreation. They help support the park by "preserving nature and history hand-in-hand." The group shares ideas and feedback with the park staff on what kind of programs the park should offer and what improvements should be made to the park. They assist with most of the park's special events and other projects. The Friends meet six times a year. Download a Friends of Claude Moore Park's Membership Application (PDF).

Summer Naturalist Intern Program

Teenagers (ages 13 to 18) who enjoy being outdoors in the natural world are encouraged to apply to be volunteer Interns. Successful applicants will receive training in a variety of areas including nature study, outdoor safety, stewardship, habitat restoration, sharing nature with children, techniques for collecting natural specimens, park history and regulations. Interns are asked to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours each month in June, July, and August. Other Volunteers

Scout troops, youth groups, school organizations, church groups, corporate groups, families, and individuals who would like to help their community are encouraged to volunteer at Claude Moore Park. Many scouts have done Boy Scout Eagle projects or Girl Scout Gold Award projects which benefit the park and its visitors. Volunteers may adopt-a-trail on a yearly basis, taking responsibility for keeping their trail trimmed and clean of litter. Every spring the park sponsors an Earth Day Clean-up/Keep Loudoun Beautiful day on which park staff, Adopt-a-trail volunteers, other groups, and individuals work together to get ready for the park’s many warm weather visitors by trimming and clearing the trails, and cleaning up the winter’s accumulation of litter. Plans are in the works to develop a docent program for the historic Lanesville house and Frogshackle Nature center in order to offer the public more opportunities to visit these interesting places.
