Important Definitions
Domestic Assault
Any assault that occurs between persons who are in a relationship, related by blood, and/or live at the same residence.
Verbal Domestic
An argument (with no physical contact) that occurs between persons who are in a relationship, related by blood, and/or live at the same residence.
Protective Orders
Court orders instructing a person to desist from abuse or harassment of a petitioner for a fixed period of time. The petitioner is the protected party/individual seeking the order. The respondent is the alleged abuser and/or suspect.
- Emergency Protective Order (active for 72 hours)-Obtained at the Magistrate’s Office
42035 Loudoun Center Place, Leesburg- Prohibits the respondent from committing further acts of abuse against the petitioner and/or household members.
- Prohibits and/or restricts the respondent’s contact with the petitioner and/or household members.
- Grants temporary, exclusive use and possession of the residence.
- Preliminary Protective Order (active for 15 days)-Obtained at Court
18 E. Market Street, Leesburg- Prohibits the respondent from committing further acts of abuse against the petitioner and/or household members.
- Prohibits and/or restricts the respondent’s contact with the petitioner and/or household members.
- Grants temporary, exclusive use and possession of the residence, vehicle, pets, and/or bill payment.
- Permanent Protective Order (active for 2 years)-Obtained at Court AFTER Preliminary Protective Order
18 E. Market Street, Leesburg- Prohibits the respondent from committing further acts of abuse against the petitioner and/or household members.
- Prohibits and/or restricts the respondent’s contact with the petitioner and/or household members.
- Grants temporary, exclusive use and possession of the residence, vehicle, pets, and/or bill payment.
A violation of a protective order is a crime. Please call 9-1-1 or the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Non-Emergency Line at 703-777-1021 immediately if the respondent violates any conditions of the protective order.
