About the Department

About Us

The Loudoun County Department of Mental Health, Substance Abuse, and Developmental Services (MHSADS) is the single point of entry into the public system of mental health, substance abuse, and developmental services for Loudoun County residents. Our goal is to connect individuals, families, and caregivers with person-centered, recovery-oriented support and services that promote health and wellness.

We begin with a meeting, either in person or through telehealth, to conduct a one-on-one screening with the individual seeking services and together identify behavioral healthcare services that are available through the public system. This screening allows MHSADS to assess the individual’s needs first and provide appropriate care; this screening is required for MHSADS to connect the individual directly to services. Anyone in the Loudoun community is eligible for this free, same-day screening.

After a one-on-one screening, MHSADS provides services directly to Loudoun County residents with public insurance (including Medicaid and Medicare) and those without insurance (residents outside of Loudoun are referred to their local jurisdiction for these services). In the case of an emergency, a crisis assessment will be conducted regardless of residence location or insurance status.

For residents covered by private insurance, MHSADS will assist these individuals with identifying covered benefits and services. MHSADS does not maintain a comprehensive list of private providers outside the public system; therefore, MHSADS does not provide general information for private providers over the phone or through the county’s website.
