COVID-19 Summary Report for April 24, 2020

Loudoun County Update
  • In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has pushed back the date of municipal elections in the state by two weeks, from May 5, 2020, to May 19, 2020, and is encouraging voters to cast absentee ballots by mail. In Loudoun County, the towns of Hamilton, Lovettsville, Middleburg, Purcellville and Round Hill will hold elections May 19, 2020, for the offices of mayor and town council members.   • Learn more about how to protect animals from COVID-19. Earlier this week, the CDC announced the first confirmed cases of COVID-19 in two pet cats in New York state. Public health officials are still learning about COVID-19, but there is no evidence that pets play a role in spreading the virus in the United States. Practice basic hygiene and distancing measures with pets and livestock and make plans for your pet if you become sick. Get the full details.  
  • Do you know the difference between diagnostic testing and serologic testing? Diagnostic testing uses a throat or mouth swab. This method has been in use for several months to test whether someone is infectious with COVID-19 at that time. Newer serologic tests look for previous infection to COVID-19 by checking for antibodies in the blood. Current serologic tests may not have gone through FDA review (see FDA statement on Serological Tests) and, more importantly, may not be able to tell the difference between strains of coronavirus (see CDC information on coronavirus types). If you are considering an antibody test, first ask whether the test is specific for COVID-19; if not, then a positive result could give you a false sense that you are immune to COVID-19 when in fact you just had the common cold.
