Loudoun Election Officials Remind Voters of Absentee Ballot Procedures for May 19 Elections

Posted on April 29, 2020 at 4:48 PM by Nancy McCormick

Loudoun County election officials are reminding voters in the upcoming town elections May 19, 2020, of steps they can take to help ensure the safety of all voters and election officers during the elections in Hamilton, Lovettsville, Middleburg, Purcellville and Round Hill.

As part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, voters are strongly encouraged to vote absentee. For those voting absentee:

  • If you have already requested and received your ballot by-mail, please fill it out and return it by mail as soon as possible.  It must be received in the Office of Elections and Voter Registration no later than 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 19, 2020.  Mail now to ensure there is enough time for it to reach the office.
  • The ballot requires the signature of a witness in addition to the signature of the voter. If you have already requested and received your ballot by-mail and do not have a witness, you can ask a neighbor or a friend to help you, while observing social-distancing protocols.
  • If you have not requested your absentee ballot yet, do so by visiting elections.virginia.gov to complete the application online.  All voters are eligible to vote absentee for this election.
  • If you choose to vote absentee in-person, you may do so at the Office of Elections and Voter Registration, 750 Miller Drive SE, Suite C, Leesburg, 20175.  Please note that all in-person absentee voting is being done curbside. Voters are not permitted to enter the office. There are signs directing voters to contact election officials upon their arrival. Voters choosing this method should expect delays due to procedures in place to protect staff and voters.

If you are planning to vote at your precinct on Election Day:

  • Be prepared for longer than usual wait times as strict social distancing guidelines will be in effect at each precinct.  Voters are asked to follow the direction of election officials.
  • All voters will be asked to wear a mask and remain 6 feet away from others at all times.
  • No more than 10 people will be permitted inside the voting room at one time, including election officials; this may mean that voters will be required to wait outside at times. Please be prepared for that in case of inclement weather.
  • Due to the strict safety measures in place, voters are asked to come to the polling place alone to ensure that the maximum number of voters can be served at one time.
