  • State officials provide COVID-19 vaccine update: Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and Dr. Danny Avula, who leads the state’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts, provided an update on the COVID-19 vaccine situation Thursday. Speaking at the site of a mass vaccination event in Richmond, Avula said one of the biggest challenges the state faces is that “‘we don’t have the supply we need.” He asked for people to be patient and to “allow others who are more vulnerable to come to the front of the line. At the end of the day, everyone who wants to get vaccinated will.” Northam said the state’s goal is to have 75 to 80 percent of Virginians vaccinated to create herd immunity to stop the transmission of the virus. Both officials acknowledged that one of the obstacles to reaching that goal is convincing people who are afraid of the vaccine that it is safe. They said they are working with community leaders to try to overcome that fear. 
  • COVID-19 vaccination registration continues in Loudoun: Loudoun County health officials continue to ask for patience from those seeking the COVID-19 vaccine. There has been no change in the vaccine supply situation in Loudoun since yesterday's report. The county is waiting for more vaccine to arrive in order to schedule more vaccination appointments. If you are in either the Phase 1a (PDF) or Phase 1b (PDF) priority group and have not submitted your information to the Health Department, please complete the online pre-screening survey, which is the most efficient method for obtaining an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccination. If you have submitted the survey, there is no need to contact the Health Department. 
  • Anniversary of first COVID-19 case in the United States.  One year ago today, on January 21, 2020, the first case of COVID-19 in the United States was reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As cases continue to rise across the country, it's more important than ever to be vigilant about preventing the spread of the virus. Wearing a face covering is one of the simplest steps you can take, in addition to staying 6 feet apart from others, avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated places and washing your hands frequently. Masks provide a barrier that keeps respiratory droplets from spreading. A cloth mask offers some protection to you as well as protecting those around you.  When we all wear masks, we take care of each other and everyone is protected. The CDC offers guidance on the correct way to wear a mask.
