The original item was published from December 12, 2019 3:37 PM to December 13, 2019 11:30 AM

Loudoun County officials are celebrating the start of construction of another road project that will ease traffic congestion: the final segment of Riverside Parkway.

Members of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors were among those on hand Thursday for a ceremonial groundbreaking, marking the beginning of construction of a new four-lane, divided road segment, extending Riverside Parkway from Silvery Blue Terrace to Loudoun County Parkway at George Washington Boulevard. The project also calls for the removal of Lexington Drive on both sides of Route 7, a new Loudoun Water main and the replacement of the existing temporary traffic signal at Loudoun County Parkway and George Washington Boulevard with a permanent signal.

The completion of Riverside Parkway, in conjunction with the planned Battlefield Parkway Interchange project, will improve traffic flow and will allow Route 7 to operate as a freeway west of Countryside Boulevard in Loudoun County. The project also will improve connectivity among the Lexington 7, Potomac Farms, River Crest and University Center communities.

Construction of this segment of Riverside Parkway is expected to be completed by the fall of 2021. The total cost of the project is currently $23.34 million.
