Commonwealth Transportation Board Approves Road Names for Route 7 and Route 50

Posted on February 17, 2022 at 1:34 PM by Shawn Zelman

At its February 15, 2022 meeting, the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB), pursuant to § 33.2-213 of the Code of Virginia, approved renaming the portions of Route 7 and Route 50, that are within the boundaries of Loudoun County, from Harry Byrd Highway to Leesburg Pike and from John Mosby Highway to Little River Turnpike, respectively. With the CTB’s approval, Loudoun County can now move forward with the continuation of the renaming process.

Currently, Loudoun County is developing the required engineering design plan that is estimated to be approved by Virginia Department of Transportation by the end of 2022. Following this approval, fabrication of the road signs will begin. Once complete, the signs are estimated to be installed in mid-to-late 2023.

This is a step in the renaming process and residents along the corridors should expect more information about their address change at later date. The county is also developing a grant program to assist impacted businesses with costs related to address changes.

Background

During the December 7, 2021 meeting, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved changing the name of Harry Byrd Highway to Leesburg Pike and changing the name of John Mosby Highway to Little River Turnpike. These designations honor the names traditionally used for these roads, which were developed as major transportation and trade routes between Alexandria and the Shenandoah Valley in the early 1800s.

Loudoun County conducted a thorough public process for identifying and recommending new names. A task force, comprising community representatives and members of the county’s Heritage Commission, was created to conduct research, engage the public, review public name submissions and recommend alternative road names to the Board.
