Northstar Boulevard Bridge Foundation Work Continues

Posted on May 10, 2022 at 12:44 PM by Heidi Kellum

Crews constructing a new segment of Northstar Boulevard from Route 50 to Tall Cedars Parkway in Aldie recently completed pouring bridge foundations and installed a box culvert, used to maintain the flow of water underneath the roadway. Preparations for additional structural pours at the bridge are underway. In addition to roadway (and bridge) construction, this project includes the construction of a new signalized intersection on Route 50, located near the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Arcola maintenance area headquarters.

Work to install stormwater pond #1 and construction modification in the median at the intersection of Northstar Boulevard and Route 50 have begun. Ongoing work includes the installation of stormwater pipe, dry utilities and earthwork throughout the project area. Ongoing work will continue through summer 2022.

When completed, this segment of Northstar Boulevard will provide an alternative north/south connection to Route 50, addressing traffic congestion in the corridor and improving capacity and safety on existing roadway networks within the Dulles South area. Construction is expected to be completed by winter 2024.

Northstar Boulevard is part of the North/South Corridor of Statewide Significance as described in the Virginia Transportation Plan (VTrans), addressing congestion on parallel north/south routes between I-95 and Dulles International Airport and connecting travelers to activity centers in Loudoun County and beyond. The county is also developing another segment of Northstar Boulevard from Evergreen Mills Road (formerly Shreveport Drive) to Route 50, which will join this segment with the existing roadway in the Brambleton area. Construction of this segment is expected to begin in late 2022.
