During its October 18, 2022 business meeting, the Board of Supervisors endorsed the location and major design elements of the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park (W&OD) Trail overpass at Sterling Boulevard. County staff now can proceed with the final design and preparation of construction documents.
Once complete, the overpass will remove the W&OD Trail’s last at-grade crossing of a four-lane roadway in Loudoun County. Throughout the process, residents were invited to provide input during a public meeting in March 2022.
NOVA Parks operates the 45-mile W&OD, a bicycle and pedestrian trail that runs from Shirlington Road in Arlington to North 21st Street in Purcellville.
The proposed project provides for the design and construction of a W&OD Trail pedestrian/bike bridge over Sterling Boulevard (Route 846). Sterling Boulevard is Loudoun County’s only four-lane roadway that crosses the W&OD Trail. When complete, the pedestrian/bike overpass will separate pedestrians, bicyclists, horseback riders and other users of the W&OD Trail from roadway traffic on Sterling Boulevard.
