[ARCHIVED] Board of Supervisors Endorse Route 9 / 287 Roundabout Intersection Improvements

The original item was published from October 4, 2019 9:53 AM to October 18, 2019 10:54 AM

On October 2, 2019, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors formally endorsed a design plan for a roundabout at the intersection of VA Route 9 and VA Route 287.

The Virginia Department of Transportation analyzed the intersection in 2014 to develop design alternatives to reduce traffic delays. The alternatives included a two-lane roundabout, a one-lane roundabout and additional turn lanes to upgrade the intersection.

Contractor Wallace Montgomery performed traffic analyses and developed a design which will construct a hybrid roundabout. The hybrid design incorporates two lanes in the eastbound/westbound direction and one lane in the northbound/southbound direction. Six-tenths of a mile of Routes 9 and 287 which approach the roundabout will be widened.

Animated traffic model videos of roundabout movements during morning and evening peak travel hours have been posted to the project webpage on the county website.
