Project Update: August 2020
- FEMA has published a draft revised map of the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA). This map, based on an analysis conducted by Wood PLC in November 2019, was received by the county on August 10, 2020. It will be used by FEMA to determine which homeowners will be part of the mitigation program. While 14 properties were initially identified as eligible for the buyout program, the final number may be modified, based on the revisions to the SFHA. See the map here (PDF).
- The county is moving forward with preparing an application for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Grant program to fund mitigation initiatives, including buyouts of eligible properties.
- The Department of Building and Development reminds affected homeowners that to qualify for the FEMA mitigation project, you must have flood insurance on their property by September 30. There is a 30-day window before insurance policies go into effect, so if you do not currently have flood insurance, you must apply by August 30. Learn how to apply for flood insurance.
- For the grant application, homeowners must commit to participate in the grant application process but the commitment is not binding. A binding commitment would be required at the time of settlement.
- If the County receives a grant award and a home is eligible for acquisition, FEMA has indicated that they will pay market value as of the time of the grant award, which is expected to be January 2022. This is a change from previous information provided, which indicated that FEMA would pay assessed value.
