Focusing on COVID-19 Prevention for Teens and Young Adults

Posted on October 27, 2020 at 12:03 PM by MaryFrances Forcier

Let’s face it: we’re all ready to defeat COVID-19 and get back to everything we’d rather be doing.

And, with community transmission of the virus that causes COVID-19 still a concern in Loudoun and nationally, the county is reaching out to young people with an important video message: take simple precautionary actions now, so we can more quickly return to our “regularly scheduled lives.”

A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that young people might be playing an increasingly important role in spreading it to family and community members. The CDC found that confirmed coronavirus infections increased threefold among those under age 19 from May to July, and was highest among young adults 20 to 29 years old. And while our youth may feel invincible, they are not immune from the effects of COVID-19.

Actions that young people can take now include:

  • Keeping hangouts small, outdoors, and six feet apart
  • Wearing a mask
  • Maintaining social distancing

Conversations with youth-led community organizations helped the county focus its prevention messages in the 30-second #Maskingforafriend videos.

Loudoun residents will be seeing these videos soon on social media platforms, including Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and Facebook.

Parents of teens, or those who work with teens, are encouraged to share the videos, which can be found in English and Spanish on the county’s YouTube channel.
