Route 9/287 Roundabout Design Plans Submitted for Review and Approval

Posted on March 17, 2021 at 10:43 AM by Heidi Kellum

In January, 100% design plans and floodplain alteration for the Route 9/287 Roundabout project were submitted to Loudoun County Building & Development (B&D) and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for review and approval. A design waiver, required for the completion of the project design, was approved by VDOT in December.

The County is currently working on securing nutrient credits for the project, required to satisfy state and local stormwater runoff requirements. Each credit represents a specific amount of absorption of nutrients within a sub-watershed. Virginia’s nutrient trading program is administered by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

Construction will follow the completion of ongoing utility coordination and right of way (ROW) acquisition, estimated to begin spring 2021.

The Route 9 and 287 Roundabout project consists of approximately one mile of roadway improvements, including a two-lane roundabout at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 287. Improvements will also include new drainage and storm water facilities, as well as relocation of some utilities.

When complete, the project will significantly reduce existing traffic congestion, improve safety and provide a long-term, cost-effective solution for future maintenance.
