Loudoun County Update

- What You Need to Know About Additional Doses of COVID-19 Vaccine: As we reported in an earlier blog post today, Virginia is offering people with weakened immune systems a third COVID-19 vaccine dose to strengthen protection against the coronavirus. Additional doses are available for people who have received two doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine and who are moderately and severely immunocompromised. The additional dose is the same formulation as the first two doses of Pfizer or Moderna that people have received and is available at many pharmacies, medical offices and at Loudoun County’s vaccination site. For people with normal immune systems, the need for and timing of a COVID-19 vaccine booster dose has not been established yet, although it is under active study. Read more detailed information about additional vaccine doses in this Loudoun County news release.

- CDC Strengthens Vaccine Recommendation for People Who Are Pregnant, Breastfeeding, or Thinking of Becoming Pregnant:  On August 11, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strongly recommended COVID-19 vaccination for everyone aged 12 years and older, including people who are pregnant or breastfeed and those who are trying to become pregnant now or thinking of becoming pregnant in the future, as well as their partners. This stronger recommendation was based on new data on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines during pregnancy.  A new CDC analysis of data from the v-safe pregnancy registry found no increased risk of miscarriage among people who were pregnant who received an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine before 20 weeks of pregnancy. This adds to a previous report that reviewed data from CDC’s vaccine safety monitoring systems and found no safety risks for pregnant individuals who received vaccines during late pregnancy or their babies.

-  Walk-Ins Welcome at Loudoun Vaccine Clinic: Anyone 12 and older may walk into the county’s COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Dulles Town Center without an appointment to receive a COVID-19 vaccine during the clinic’s operating hours. Those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Appointments may also be scheduled online. More information about planning your trip to the clinic, located at 21090 Dulles Town Circle, Sterling, is online. The clinic’s hours this week are Tuesday, August 17, 4:00 – 6:30 p.m.; Friday, August 20, 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; and Saturday, August 21, 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  A reminder that the Loudoun County COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Dulles Town Center is scheduled to close permanently the evening of Tuesday, August 24, 2021. Vaccines are readily available from many providers throughout the area. Find vaccination opportunities at pharmacies and other locations in the region at vaccines.gov.

- Happening Now - COVID-19 Testing: Loudoun County is holding a free COVID-19 testing event at Philip A. Bolen Memorial Park, 42405 Claudia Drive, Leesburg today (8/16/21) until 6:00 p.m. (Enter the park on Crosstrail Boulevard from Sycolin Road.) The event is free and open to everyone. Details, including links to registration forms that can be filled out and printed ahead of time, are online at loudoun.gov/COVID19testing. 

- Face Masks Required Indoors in Virginia Pre-K-12 Schools: As of August 12, 2021, a public health order from the Virginia Health Commissioner requires all individuals aged two and older to wear masks when indoors at public and private K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. The order also applies to pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) if the program is at a K-12 school. The order does not apply to outdoor school settings. State health officials recommend those who are not fully vaccinated wear masks in crowded outdoor settings or during outdoor activities that involve close contact with other people, but it is not a requirement. The public health order reinforces the current state law (Senate Bill 1303) that requires Virginia schools, to the maximum extent possible, to use prevention strategies outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CDC’s recommended strategies currently include masking of all teachers, staff, students and visitors while indoors. Masks must be worn on school buses, as required by a federal order.

- VDH Dashboard Changes: The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has made some changes to its online COVID-19 data dashboards effective today (8/16/21) that officials say will help make it easier to follow the data and learn more about COVID-19 in Virginia. Changes includes a new Level of Community Transmission dashboard, which shows the level of spread of COVID-19 in regions, cities and counties. For example, Loudoun 's level of community transmission is reported as "substantial." Read more from VDH about the changes here.
