Loudoun County Update

  • Celebrate the Holidays Safely:  Health officials say you don’t have to give up your holiday traditions this year amid the “winter surge” of COVID-19 and emergence of the Omicron variant, but you should prepare for the holidays with care and celebrate safely. You can protect your family and loved ones through vaccination and testing.
    • Vaccination: Health officials say everyone age 5 and older should be vaccinated and everyone over 16 who is eligible for a booster should get one. Vaccines are free of charge and available to all. Many providers also have the flu vaccine. Influenza is widespread in Virginia. It's safe to get a COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot at the same time. Find available vaccination appointments from a wide variety of providers at vaccines.gov.
    • Testing: Health officials recommend that anyone who is traveling for the holidays should get tested ahead of time. Loudoun County provides free COVID-19 testing weekly, on Tuesdays, at various locations. (See next item) Find other testing opportunities through the Virginia Department of Health website
  • Next Loudoun County Testing Event: This week's Loudoun County-sponsored COVID-19 testing event will be held Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at Claude Moore Park, 46150 Loudoun Park Lane in Sterling, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The drive-thru event is free and open to all. Required registration forms can be filled out ahead of time. You can find links to the forms as well as a schedule of testing events online at loudoun.gov/COVID19testing.
    • Who Should Get Tested? Anyone, regardless of vaccination status, who thinks they may have been exposed to COVID-19 should get tested as well as anyone exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue and a new loss of taste or smell. In addition, anyone who plans to travel for the holidays is also encouraged to get tested before and after traveling or gathering in groups.
  • Update on Johnson & Johnson Vaccine: The Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine is still available at Loudoun County’s vaccination clinic at Dulles Town Center, although health experts advise that either the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is preferred over J&J for an initial series and a booster. The Virginia Department of Health is following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommendation which favors an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer and Moderna) over J&J. In addition, the CDC says that that getting any vaccine is better than being unvaccinated, so individuals 18 and older who are unable or unwilling to receive an mRNA vaccine will continue to have access to J&J’s vaccine.
