The Route 15 South Safety and Operational Study final report will be presented to the Board of Supervisors at the February 1, 2022 Business Meeting. Here is a link to the item.

To watch the meeting, you can watch on Cable TV (Comcast Government Channel 23 or Verizon FiOS Channel); online at (includes archives); or attend in-person at the Government Center Board Room.

During the study’s investigation, short-term improvement recommendations were identified which have been relayed to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to address as part of their maintenance program. One of those issues was the removal of overgrown vegetation to address sight distance issues at certain intersections. VDOT has removed overgrown vegetation based on the recommendations. Loudoun County also suggested additional street signs to improve safety along the corridor and recently prepared a signage plan which has been submitted to VDOT for review.

Based on the public’s preferences and the focus group’s feedback, the study team recommends a prioritized approach for long-term improvements to improve safety and level of service on Route 15 South, while preserving the rural character and natural beauty of the corridor. These recommendations are primarily intersection-focused improvements.

This project consists of a safety and operational study of approximately 12 miles of Route 15 (James Monroe Highway) from the south corporate limit of the Town of Leesburg to the Prince William County line. The study identified safety and traffic operational issues and will present recommended solutions for consideration by the Board of Supervisors. Throughout the study, public and focus group meetings were held to capture local observations, perspectives and concerns along the corridor.
