[ARCHIVED] National Public Safety Telecommunications Week Celebrated

Loudoun County, VA – This week marks the National Public Safety Telecommunications Week as set aside by Congress, and celebrated by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International and the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), to pay tribute to the work public safety communications professionals perform.

The week of April 8 thru Saturday April 14, has been recognized as Virginia Public Safety Telecommunicator’s Week by Governor Robert F. McDonnell. Congressman Frank Wolf and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office join public safety agencies on the local, state and national level to honor the work of public safety communications professionals.

“The Emergency Communication personnel in our community play a crucial role in public safety, and are our first-line intake to handling emergency situations,” said Wolf. “Emergency Communications professionals assume a daily, critical role in gathering essential information, assessing urgency and delivering information quickly and accurately which can mean the difference in a life or death situation.”

Each day, thousands of Americans dial 9-1-1 for help in emergencies that can be life-threatening.

“Loudoun’s public safety relies on the emergency communications professionals and their team to serve as the direct link between residents and first responders,” said Loudoun County Sheriff Michael L. Chapman. “Everyday, Loudoun County Emergency Communication personnel handle vital information in a professional and timely manner. I’m pleased with this team of dedicated personnel and congratulate them on their important work,” added Chapman.

Designating a specific week to honor public safety telecommunicators was first conceived in 1981 by a member of APCO International’s Northern California Chapter. APCO International introduced the week to Congress in October 1991. According to congressional procedure, it was introduced twice more – in 1993 and 1994 – before becoming permanent without the need for yearly introduction. National Public Safety Telecommunications Week is the second full week of April each year and is dedicated to public safety telecommunicators who aid in providing emergency assistance to citizens everywhere.
