WEST VIRGINIA MAN SENTENCED TO ELEVEN YEARS
FOR WESTERN LOUDOUN BURGLARIES

LEESBURG, Virginia – April 29, 2014. Charles John Shirley Jr., 33, was sentenced to 11 years in prison in connection with a string of burglaries that occurred in Western Loudoun County during the summer of 2012. Shirley entered guilty pleas to armed burglary, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and five separate counts of burglary on January 27, 2014.

In the fall of 2012, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Detectives were contacted by West Virginia State Police advising that they had recovered numerous items from Shirley’s home in West Virginia. These items had previously been reported stolen from residences in western Loudoun County. Subsequent investigations lead to additional stolen property being located in residences belonging to relatives of Shirley as well as his girlfriend. Among the stolen items were jewelry, electronics, and firearms.

During an interview with law enforcement, Shirley stated that he had committed too many burglaries for him to remember, but he was “probably good” for all the burglaries in western Loudoun County the previous summer. He went on to say that he was usually under the influence of heroin at the time and that his addiction caused him to do things he knew were wrong.

“These investigations demonstrate a very efficient and coordinated effort with our neighboring states and counties that took this individual off the street,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Plowman. “While drug addiction is often found at the root of other criminal behavior, the multitude of victims cannot be overlooked in a case such as this.” Shirley is currently serving time in Augusta County, Virginia for burglary, larceny, and drug possession charges and faces similar charges in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and several neighboring Virginia counties.

In addition to the total active sentence of 11 years in the Virginia Department of Corrections, Judge James F. Almond imposed an additional 61 years of suspended time which could be revoked should Shirley violate the terms of his supervised probation upon his release. Shirley was further ordered to make restitution in excess of $6,000 to victims in the Loudoun County cases.
