[ARCHIVED] LCAS Tongue-in-Cheek Adoption Campaign Highlights Problem of Overweight Cats

Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) is having fun with National Doughnut Day, Friday, June 5, 2015, by tying the celebration of doughnuts to the problem of overweight felines. Between now and June 6, 2015, adoption fees for overweight cats will be waived.

“We hope that this will encourage people to adopt our overweight cats and help them stay on their diet and exercise plans, foiling any plans to binge on doughnuts,” said Amy Martin, Assistant Director - Programs and Services, of the Loudoun County Department of Animal Services. Obesity in pets is a common problem which can lead to negative health effects, including increased risk of diabetes and joint pain. A combination of diet and exercise is important to keep pets at healthy weights. Owners must also modify their behavior, including cutting back on excessive treats and providing more exercise opportunities for pets. LCAS advises that an owner who is concerned about a pet’s weight or health consult a veterinarian, especially before beginning a weight loss plan for the pet.

LCAS operates an animal shelter which provides for companion animals that have been surrendered by their owners or found stray in the county. The shelter also offers pets for adoption. Officers enforce local and state animal laws and investigate reports of animal cruelty. LCAS also maintains a lost and found animal file, issues dog licenses and assists citizens with a variety of animal issues. For more information, contact LCAS at 703-777-0406 or animals@loudoun.gov.
