All Loudoun County Public Library branches will be closed Sunday and Monday, March 27 and 28, 2016, for a major upgrade of the Library’s catalog system.

The closure is necessary because the library’s current computer systems will be shut down beginning at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2016, and staff will be dedicated to implementation of the new system.
During the closure, databases, e-books, digital media or other materials cannot be accessed, and materials cannot be placed on hold nor checked out. Fines will be suspended on materials due Friday, March 25 through Monday, April 4, 2016.

In the last year, patrons used the catalog to check out more than 5.8 million books, audiobooks, DVDs and movies, which equates to approximately 18 items per Loudoun resident.

“Loudoun County should have a modern, user-friendly online catalog,” said Library Director Chang Liu. “The advent of Netflix, Amazon and Google has raised the bar for the user experience over the past few years; libraries are taking the lessons learned from consumer sites and applying them to their customers’ information needs.”

Over the past 18 months, staff members from Library Services and the Loudoun County Department of Information Technology have been working to implement a new online library catalog. Loudoun County selected a system used by major libraries throughout the country, including the Los Angeles Public Library, the Chicago Public Library, and the Metropolitan Library System of Oklahoma City.

Library staff will assist users in using the new catalog in branches and online; it will be operational Tuesday, March 29, 2016.

Residents are encouraged to visit the library’s website at library.loudoun.gov and their local library branches to learn how to use the catalog’s new features, which include:

  • Integration of Overdrive e-books
  • Easier to find new books, movies, and music
  • Customers can create a username and password instead of using their library card number.
  • Mobile-friendly and more visual design
  • Online children’s catalog, "Scout," designed for even pre-readers to use
  • A temporary library card online, which allows immediate access to downloadable material and online database subscriptions
