[ARCHIVED] Youth Leadership Program Participants Visit Clerk's Office

Youth Leaders News Flash

A group of talented teenagers who attend Loudoun County Public Schools visited the Clerk’s Office recently. These Loudoun teens, representing most of Loudoun’s high schools, were selected to participate in the Loudoun Youth Leadership Program for 2018. During their visit, they learned about our historic records collections that date to 1757 and why the historic court records are relevant to Loudoun citizens. Joining Clerk Clemens in the tour and discussion were the historic records division team of Eric Larson, Sarah Markel and Alyssa Fisher. Mr. Larson provided examples of certain records collections and explained the preservation process to protect these value records.

“In the age of computers, mobile devices and other hand-held tech tools that young people use frequently today, it is significant to share our history in the form of papers that tell important narratives of Loudoun citizens in the 1700’s, 1800’s and beyond,” explained Gary Clemens, Clerk of the Circuit Court. Clemens and Larson emphasize that these vast collections of unique court records are the people’s records and available for public inspection by visiting the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s historic records museum.

The historic records division is located in the basement of the Clerk’s Office located at 18 East Market Street. For more information regarding the hours of operation and the diverse collection of historic artifacts, visit www.loudoun.gov/clerk.

The historic records division conducts periodic public education programs in downtown Leesburg and the schedule of events can be found on the webpages for the historic records division at www.loudoun.gov/clerk/archives.
