Loudoun County, VA- Seven members of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office were recognized Thursday by the Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute (VSI) in the inaugural class of the VSI Certification Program. 


Recognized from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) was Sheriff Mike Chapman, Lt. Col. Mark Poland, Major Jeff Ebersole, Major Chris Hines, Sgt. Raymond Gessner, 1st Lt. Chris Sawyer, and Investigator Ron Beach.


The VSI Certification Program recognizes those Virginia sheriffs and deputies who continue individual professional development and a commitment to excellence, life-long learning, and advancement of public safety as a profession. 


“The fact that seven of the 25 members of the inaugural class of the VSI Certification Program are members of the Loudoun Sheriff’s Office exemplifies the professionalism of the agency and our staff.  It is also a testament to our leadership’s expectation for their professional service,” said Sheriff Chapman.

Each recipient of the certificate met specific requirements to include years of service, education, hours of training (career development) and professional development, to include instruction of public safety training. 


“I congratulate the men and women who have taken time to participate in this voluntary certification program in which I am honored to be a part of,” said Sheriff Michael S. Mondul, City of Danville, President, Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute. “Each member of this inaugural class has demonstrated a deep personal commitment to exemplifying the professionalism and leadership necessary to instill confidence in the public safety function.”


Members of the 2018 inaugural class included representatives from the Arlington County Sheriff’s Office, the Hampton Sheriff’s Office, the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office, the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office, the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office, the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, the Danville Sheriff’s Office, the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office, the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, the King William County Sheriff’s Office and the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office. 


The VSI Certification Program was developed by the Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute (VSI) in cooperation with the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association (VSA), the Performance Management Group at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and the Virginia Center for Policing Innovation (VCPI).
