Keep it Safe-LCSO Reminds Residents to Lock your Car Doors

Loudoun County, VA- The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to be extra vigilant in locking their vehicles following an increase in thefts from parked vehicles  in the County over the holiday weekend.

The area saw a rash of larcenies with more than two dozen thefts across the county over the past week. The suspect(s) are searching for unlocked vehicles and in recent cases valuables such as purses, electronics, cash or and firearms have been stolen.  In some cases, the suspect(s) took it one step further and used the garage door opener in the vehicle to get into the garage and then into the home.

The most recent cases occurred between November 28 and November 29 when multiple vehicles in the Dominion Station community (Box Car Square) in Sterling were entered. Three garages were also entered and in one case a home was entered by using a garage door opener from inside a vehicle parked outside.

In the community of Loudoun Valley Estates II (Ashley Heights Circle, Colts Run Square, Mount Middleton Square, and Berkley Meadows Drive) in Ashburn, multiple vehicles were entered, rummaged through and items were taken during the overnight hours of November 25 and November 26.

In the Sterling area the rash of thefts occurred in the area of the Cascades Park community (Livingstone Station Street, Shagbark Terrace) during the hours of midnight to 1:15 a.m. on November 24 and in the Southbank community (Middle Bluff Place, Rivercliff Court, and Sisler Court) on November 27 at approximately 12:30 a.m. In these neighborhoods, multiple vehicles were entered and items were stolen.

During the overnight hours from November 17 and November 18, residents in the Ashburn Farm community also reported their vehicles were entered and electronics were stolen.

In the Dulles South area, residents in the South Riding community (Burke Dale Street, Tadman Lane, and Flintonbridge Drive) reported that between the hours of 12:20-12:35 a.m. on November 24 multiple vehicles were entered and items were stolen.

One suspect in these thefts was described to be a White male, 5’11 with a thin build. He was wearing a blue puffy jacket, beanie hat with a top ball and carrying a large backpack.

In light of these cases, The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit is offering residents several tips for deterring thefts from vehicles:

    • KEEP YOUR VEHICLE LOCKED. Most stolen items are taken from vehicles that are left unlocked.
    • Remove all items from your vehicle, including garage door openers, when not in use. When you cannot do this, put the items out of sight (inside a lockable glove box or trunk). If your vehicle has an integrated garage door opener, please keep the openers out of sight.
    • Park inside your garage, where possible, and keep the garage locked. Or, try to park your vehicle near or under an illuminated area.
    • Report suspicious activity immediately by calling the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 703-777-1021 or call 9-1-1.

If you have any information regarding these cases you are asked to contact the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office at 703-777-1021.
