The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors will receive a briefing on the global coronavirus outbreak and the county’s preparedness and response efforts during a special meeting of the Board on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Board Room at the Loudoun County Government Center, 1 Harrison Street, SE, in Leesburg.

Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting or watch the briefing on Comcast Government TV Channel 23, Open Band Channel 40 and Verizon FiOS Channel 40, or online at loudoun.gov/webcast.

Loudoun County Director of Health Dr. David Goodfriend will brief the Board on the novel coronavirus that causes the disease known as COVID-19 and the actions being taken in Loudoun County to mitigate the infection’s impact in our community. Currently, the Loudoun County Health Department is engaged with its regional, state and federal partners to address COVID-19, some of whom will be on hand for the briefing, including representatives of Loudoun’s hospitals and Office of Emergency Management. As outlined in the county’s Pandemic Response Plan, these efforts include monitoring travelers, educating the public, collaborating with health care providers, and working with schools on the appropriate protocols at this time.

Currently, there are no reported cases of COVID-19 in Virginia. The health department recommends the proven actions that everyone can take to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including COVID-19:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash; or cough or sneeze into the sleeve of your shirt.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces.
  • Follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations for using a facemask:
    • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
    • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others, and by health workers.

In response to the rapidly evolving situation and to provide members of the public with a convenient method for receiving updates on the local response to COVID-19, Loudoun County will begin an email and text subscription service through which regular updates will be published. Members of the public who are interested in receiving the county’s updates may sign up at lloudoun.gov/coronavirus.
