[ARCHIVED] April 1, 2020, is Census Day: Residents Encouraged to Respond to Census Now

Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a census to count every resident in the United States. April 1, 2020, is designated Census Day, a day that determines who is counted and a day when residents are encouraged to take ten minutes to complete the 2020 census questionnaire if they haven’t done so already.

Recognizing the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has created for the 2020 census, Loudoun County officials continue to encourage residents to respond as quickly as possible.

“During this pandemic, many people are looking for ways to help their community,” said Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis J. Randall, who is also the county’s chair of the 2020 Census Complete Count Committee. “One critical way to help Loudoun in the long term is to take 10 minutes and respond online to the 2020 census. Census Day should be a day that celebrates what makes Loudoun so great—our people.”

Chair Randall will speak to the community about the 2020 census during a Facebook Live event on Thursday, April 2, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. Members of the community are encouraged to watch on the county’s official Facebook page, facebook.com/LoudounCountyVa. Members of the public will be able to ask questions about the census process.

“The 2020 census can build on our strength and unite our community even more by making every resident regardless of age, race, ethnicity, or origin feel heard,” Randall said. “It also funds programs that help Loudoun families in times of need for the next 10 years.”

Some of the challenges to getting a complete count in Loudoun because of COVID-19 include:

  • The cancellation of more than 60 community outreach events, many scheduled at public schools.
  • The cancellation of door-to-door outreach efforts by community groups.
  • The closure of public spaces such as libraries and community centers where people without internet access at home would be able to respond online.
  • As of March 30, 2020, Loudoun’s response rate for the 2020 census is 47.4%.

“In order to receive our fair share of resources that the federal government bases on the census, we must get an accurate count of everyone who lives in Loudoun County as of today,” Randall added. “It’s critical that each of us fulfills our responsibility to participate in the census and increase the county’s response rate as soon as possible.”

To minimize the need for the U.S. Census Bureau to send census takers out into communities to follow up, residents are encouraged to complete the census online, by phone, or by mail.

  • Online: Residents should have by now received mail with instructions and a code to respond online. Residents can also access the census at www.2020Census.gov
  • By phone: Residents may provide their census responses over the phone
  • By mail: Households will receive a paper form in the mail in April if a response has not been recorded.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the census response deadline has been extended to August 14, 2020.

Census responses are confidential and by law cannot be shared with any government agency outside of the U.S. Census Bureau.

The census is available in 13 languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Haitian Creole, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, Tagalog and Vietnamese.
