[ARCHIVED] Paper Census Forms Arriving in the Mail This Week for Some Loudoun Households

Loudoun County households that have not yet responded to the 2020 census will be receiving paper questionnaires through the mail this week. Reply envelopes with paid postage also will be included. Some households will receive questionnaires in both English and Spanish.

Although the federal government has extended the response time for the census due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Loudoun County officials encourage residents to respond now if they have not already done so.

The safest way to respond to the 2020 census is at home, either by mail, online or by phone. Households that have not received mail from the census can respond online in 10 minutes without a census identification number at 2020Census.gov. Residents may also call the Census Bureau to provide their responses in English at 1-844-330-2020 or in Spanish at 1-844-468-2020.

Loudoun’s response rate continues to improve. As of April 14, 2020, 65% of households have responded, compared to 47.4% as of March 30, 2020.

Some of the county’s nonprofit partners in the census, who are also providing services to those impacted by the pandemic, are encouraging residents to respond by providing census information and instructions as they distribute food or other aid.

An accurate count of Loudoun County residents is important to the community in many ways. The count affects the allocation of federal funding to the county and affects how legislative districts are drawn, which can impact the number of seats that the state has in the U.S. House of Representatives as well as state and local representation. Federal funding based on the census affects a variety of services in Loudoun, including Head Start, free/reduced-cost lunches for school children, food stamps, affordable housing, health care services and transportation.
