[ARCHIVED] County Postpones Summer Registration

PRCS COVID-19 status update image

The Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) will forego a printed summer activity guide and postpone registration for summer activities. Senior and general registration, previously scheduled May 20 and May 21,2020, are postponed while centers remain closed and programs canceled in response to the pandemic and the Commonwealth of Virginia Executive Order No. 62, which delays phase one of the state’s reopening until May 29, 2020, for Northern Virginia jurisdictions, including Loudoun. Phase 1 is expected to last from two to four weeks, depending on the ability of localities to meet the state’s criteria for progression to phase two and phase three.

“It remains my hope to offer modified summer camps and programs and reopen our facilities when we can safely progress to Phase 2," stated Steve Torpy, PRCS Director. “Staff is adjusting our usual programming and facility use methodology to be prepared for when conditions change, which will allow us to once again operate activities in a safe manner.”

A decision regarding the feasibility of operating PRCS summer camps, which started accepting enrollees in March, was previously planned for today, May 15, 2020. That decision will be delayed until after Loudoun enters phase one. If modified summer activities can be held safely, descriptive and registration details will be posted online at loudoun.gov/prcs. If the decision impacts summer camp registrants, refund notifications will be sent to currently enrolled families.

"Our goal is to provide as much time as possible for families to plan their summer and for staff to be trained and modify our sites to accommodate any activities that we might be able to offer," stated Torpy. As part of its reopening plans, the department has prepared a survey for citizens, which will be available the week of May 18, 2020.
