[ARCHIVED] Loudoun Board of Supervisors Approves Nonprofit Human Service Grant Funding Awards for FY 2022

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved annual awards for funding to community nonprofit organizations during its meeting on April 20, 2021. Funding opportunities were made available to tax-exempt, private, nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations that provide human services to Loudoun County residents in the areas of need identified and approved by the Board of Supervisors for Fiscal Year 2022 (FY 2022), which begins July 1, 2021.

The areas of need and the anticipated outcomes are:

  • Prevention and Self-Sufficiency: Services focused on assisting individuals and families in becoming and/or remaining independent and stable, and providing tools, skills, strategies, and resources to individuals and families.
  • Crisis Intervention and Diversion: Services provided to individuals and families in crisis to overcome immediate problems, and reduce or prevent the need for more restrictive and expensive higher-level services. 
  • Long-Term Support: Services that focus on assisting individuals who have continuing, long-term support needs to remain healthy, safe and independent in the community. 
  • Improved Quality of Human Services: Services and opportunities provided to individuals, organizations and communities that enhance the quality, accessibility, accountability and coordination of services provided by community organizations.

The county’s FY 2022 Adopted Budget includes an overall allocation of $2,911,386 in local tax funding for nonprofit organizations, which includes $1,831,456 allocated for this year’s competitive grant process and the mini-grant process. 

Competitive Grants

Through the county’s competitive grants process, 24 nonprofit organizations were selected to receive more than $1.7 million in grant funding in FY 2022:

  • A Place To Be ($80,100)
  • Brain Injury Services ($42,000)
  • Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington ($104,525)
  • Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties ($54,600)
  • Dulles South Food Pantry ($28,539)
  • Friends of Loudoun Mental Health ($26,762)
  • INMED Partnerships for Children ($103,216)
  • Legal Services of Northern Virginia ($76,660)
  • Loudoun Cares ($57,090)
  • Loudoun ENDependence ($100,570)
  • Loudoun Habitat for Humanity ($44,837)
  • Loudoun Hunger Relief ($104,525)
  • Loudoun Literacy Council ($93,287)
  • Mobile Hope ($104,525)
  • Northern Virginia Family Service ($30,606)
  • Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons ($36,031)
  • Opportunities, Alternatives, and Resources (OAR) ($89,835)
  • PRS ($66,817)
  • Ryan Bartel Foundation ($45,909)
  • SCAN of Northern Virginia ($105,090)
  • The Arc of Loudoun ($101,700)
  • The Chris Atwood Foundation ($106,506)

Mini-Grants

Ten organizations will receive a total of $48,977 in mini-grant funding, requests of $5,000 or less which helps smaller organizations build capacity or support small-scale innovative ideas or projects. Those organizations, each of which were awarded their requested amount, are: 

  • All Ages Read Together ($5,000)
  • Help for Others, Inc. ($5,000)
  • Just Neighbors Ministry Inc ($5,000)
  • Loudoun Commission on Women and Girls ($3,977)
  • Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Foundation, Inc ($5,000)
  • Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy ($5,000)
  • Love, KK ($5,000)
  • The Fenwick Foundation ($5,000)
  • The Piedmont Environmental Council ($5,000)
  • YMCA Loudoun County ($5,000)

For the competitive and mini-grant processes, a total of 48 nonprofit organizations submitted applications, requesting over $2.5 million for FY 2022 funding consideration. Thirty-four organizations received funding. All requests were capped at $113,000 prior to applying the county’s allocation formula; to ensure a healthy funding mix, no applicant was allocated more than 30 percent of their organization’s total budget.
