[ARCHIVED] Loudoun to Resume Use of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine

J and J Resume News Flash

The Loudoun County Health Department will resume using the single-dose Johnson and Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine following a joint announcement by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicating the pause in the use of the J&J vaccine should be lifted. Loudoun County’s next scheduled clinic that will use J&J COVID-19 vaccine is on Saturday, May 1, 2021.

“Safety has always been our top priority and the pause in the use of the J&J vaccine allowed public health experts time to more carefully examine any concerns and to gain confidence that the vaccine is safe and effective,” said Loudoun County Health Director Dr. David Goodfriend. “The brief pause shows us that our vaccine safety system is working; now we can continue our vaccination efforts offering all available vaccines, which will help our community get back to normal as soon as possible.”

CDC and FDA Investigation

More than 6.8 million people in the U.S. have received the J&J vaccine. The recommendation to resume the use of J&J vaccine follows meetings of the Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices (ACIP), which carefully investigated a total of 15 cases of a rare blood clot disorder among women age 18-59 who experienced symptoms between 6 and 15 days after receiving the J&J vaccine. Based on the results of the ACIP investigation and evaluation of the known issue by medical experts, the CDC and FDA have determined the following:

  • Use of the J&J COVID-19 vaccine should be resumed in the United States.
  • The FDA and CDC have confidence that this vaccine is safe and effective in preventing COVID-19.
  • The FDA has determined that the available data show that the vaccine’s known and potential benefits outweigh its known and potential risks in individuals 18 years of age and older.
  • At this time, the available data suggest that the chance of thrombosis-thrombocytopenia syndrome occurring is very low, but the FDA and CDC will remain vigilant in continuing to investigate this risk.
  • Health care providers administering the vaccine and vaccine recipients or caregivers should review the J&J COVID-19 Vaccine Fact Sheet for Healthcare Providers Administering Vaccine (Vaccination Providers) and Fact Sheet for Recipients and Caregivers, which have been revised to include information about the risk of this syndrome, which has occurred in a very small number of people who have received the J&J vaccine.
