Ina Fernández will be the new director of the Loudoun County Department of Family Services, County Administrator Tim Hemstreet announced today. Fernández was selected after a nationwide recruitment. She has been serving as acting director since June 2020. Fernández’s appointment is effective May 13, 2021. 

Fernández has more than 30 years of professional experience, which includes a foundation in social work. Prior to joining Loudoun County as deputy director of the Department of Family Services in 2018, Fernández served in key roles in the Fairfax County Government, including as director of the Children, Youth and Family Division of the Fairfax County Department of Family Services and as director of the Office for Women & Domestic and Sexual Violence Services. 

“Ina is a dedicated and skilled management professional with a proven record of success in human services programs, services and government operations in Loudoun County and the National Capital Region,” said Hemstreet. “We have appreciated Ina’s leadership this year and we look forward to her continuing to lead the department and her ongoing public service for the people of Loudoun.”

As the director of the Department Family Services Director, Fernández oversees a department that administers a wide variety of programs and services that assist Loudoun’s children, families, persons with disabilities and older adults. They include: 

  • Assisting eligible families with child care and adoption services.
  • Coordinating programs to help older adult residents with shopping, transportation, and housework.
  • Investigating cases of abuse and neglect. 
  • Offering community employment and training services through the Workforce Resource Center. 
  • Overseeing the county’s Youth Shelter.
  • Providing foster care for children placed by the court or other official agreements.
  • Providing nutritional and financial assistance to low-income families. 
  • Providing parent education and support services for Loudoun County families and teens.

Fernández holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and Spanish from Gettysburg College and a master’s degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University.
