Loudoun Hunger Relief Logo

The Virginia Cooperative Extension Family Nutrition Program, "Eat Smart, Move More," empowers you to take charge of your health by eating healthy and living an active lifestyle. Our nutrition educators work with Virginians to teach essential life skills like cooking, managing a food budget, using SNAP/EBT, being physically active, handling food safely, and planning meals.

Winter break is approaching, and that means kids will be out of school for the holidays. We know that healthy eating is important at every stage of life. It’s also important to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. When we think of snacking, choose options that a full of nutrients and limit added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium.

Below are some useful tips that will help you plan healthy snacks this winter break (reference: Healthy Snacking with MyPlate):

  1. Build your own snack mix and include raisins, dried fruit, or popcorn.
  2. Prep ahead by washing and cutting up fresh vegetables so they’re ready to snack on.
  3. Combine food groups, such as yogurts and berries, to build satisfying, tasty snacks!
  4. Choose colorful raw vegetables, such as broccoli, zucchini sticks, or baby carrots. Be sure to have a healthy dipping sauce, such as hummus or low-fat yogurt.
  5. Wash and enjoy fresh fruits! They make a great snack when you are looking for a sweet treat.
  6. Keep healthy snack options, such as fruits and vegetables, within reach in the fridge for convenience.
