[ARCHIVED] Biberaj’s Statement on Roe v. Wade being Overturned by the Supreme Court

If anyone believes that outlawing abortion will end abortion, they are unfortunately misinformed. Today’s decision by the Supreme Court will result in the death of our daughters, sisters, wives, and mothers. It forces a woman to, yet again, choose between her safety and health or fear criminal prosecution. The greatest impact will be on our most vulnerable communities – victims of sexual abuse, rape, incest, human trafficking and domestic violence; the youth; women of color; and, the underprivileged. It will not stop women with means from accessing abortion care. This decision further erodes the trust women have in our courts, the law, and our government.

Now that Roe v. Wade has been overturned, abortion has been or will soon be banned in at least 26 states. Among the most draconian and dangerous statutes are Texas’ trigger law and an Alabama law under which those who perform an abortion could face life sentences in prison. Bans in Missouri, Tennessee and Utah carry sentences of up to 15 years for providers of abortion care. A recent law in Oklahoma makes it a felony to provide abortions, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, with no exceptions for rape or incest. These laws intend to punish the mothers more harshly than the sexual offender. That should not be our United States. And, fortunately that is not OUR Virginia.

As the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Loudoun County, I will fight to prevent these laws from being passed in Virginia.

My commitment to women, and especially the women of Loudoun County, I stand by you. I stand with you. I will protect you. I will do all that I can to ensure that you have the right to make your personal healthcare decisions so that you can continue to live. You are NOT dispensable. And, if anyone seeks to harm, harass, or hurt any individual or medical provider associated with a women’s right to access health care, they will be prosecuted. I will not tolerate any violence against a woman and her fundamental right to choose.
