Deputy Struck While Conducting DUI Investigation

Press release website

Loudoun County, VA (March 11, 2023) – A Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) deputy was struck while in his cruiser by a drunk driver.

This morning at approximately 1:18 a.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on a suspected Driving Under the Influence (DUI) driver in the area of Route 7 (east) at the ramp to 28 South, in Ashburn.

While deputies were conducting their investigation, and at approximately 2:00 a.m., a vehicle crashed into one of the patrol vehicles with the deputy inside, causing significant damage (photos included).  Neither the deputy nor the driver was injured.  The driver of the striking vehicle was found to be under the influence and arrested.  The deputy’s emergency equipment on his patrol vehicle was active at the time of the crash.

“This incident highlights the dangers our deputies face every day,” said Sheriff Mike Chapman.  “This could have ended tragically, and we are thankful that both the deputy and the driver were not injured.”

The driver of the initial traffic stop, Steven A. Hall, 31, of Ashburn, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, and transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center where he is being held on a $2,500 unsecured bond.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the deputy, Christian A. Freeman, 24, of Herndon, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Reckless Driving, and transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center where he is being held pending a bond review.
