[ARCHIVED] Three Things to Know about the Air Quality Alert for Loudoun & the Region

Loudoun County residents are advised that a Code Red Air Quality Alert has been issued for Northern Virginia and the greater metropolitan Washington D.C. region. Air quality is expected to be poor through Thursday, June 8, 2023, in part due to smoke from dozens of ongoing wildfires in Canada.

A Code Red Air Quality Alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region are unhealthy for the general population and that everyone should take precautions. Here are three things residents should know about air quality:

1. Know How to Protect Yourself from Poor Air Quality

  • Limit strenuous outdoor activity.
  • Keep outdoor activities short.
  • Consider rescheduling outdoor activities or moving them indoors.
  • Avoid being outdoors if you have a respiratory or heart ailment, emphysema, asthma or chronic bronchitis.
  • Avoid waiting in long drive-thru lines.
  • Combine trips.

2. Know What You Can Do to Reduce Air Pollution

  • Carpool or take public transit.
  • Drive less. Avoid long drive-thru lines.
  • Postpone mowing.
  • Refuel vehicles after dark.

3. Stay Air Quality Aware
