Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) took home two awards from the recent Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Animal Services Awards ceremony.

The entire Department of Animal Services staff was honored with the Animal Care Award for their excellent work and dedication to the community and animals they serve in Loudoun County. Staff members were recognized for going above and beyond to ensure happy endings for particularly difficult adoption candidates including a paralyzed Maltese that required a doggie wheelchair for mobility and an American Bulldog that required double knee replacement. Resources for these special cases were ensured through the department’s network of rescue partners, volunteer support and the dedication and commitment of LCAS staff.

Animal Control Officer Chris Brosan was presented with the Humane Education Award for his exceptional work in educating Loudoun’s youth about the humane and lawful treatment of animals, bite prevention and other animal welfare topics. Officer Brosan was recognized for his creation of an innovative new program, SAVE – Stop Abuse and Violence Effort which aims to mitigate the link between animal abuse and familial violence through education and multi-disciplinary collaboration.

Loudoun County Animal Services was also nominated for three additional awards – the Community Impact Award for its Loudoun Pet Pantry initiative and Animal Control Officer Whitney Dodge were nominated for the Animal Control Officer Award for her dedicated work as an exemplary Animal Control Officer and Volunteer Rick Wasser for the Volunteer Service Award for his enchanting photography that highlight adoptable pets at Loudoun County Animal Services.

“We are honored to be recognized by our peers for our accomplishments,” said Animal Services Director Thomas Koenig. “I’m very proud of the Animal Services team, Officer Brosan and the outstanding nominees; the regional recognition for their work is well deserved.”

The Council of Governments (COG) is a regional organization of Washington area governments, composed of 21 jurisdictions in the Metro Washington area. COG's Animal Services Committee hosts a bi-annual awards ceremony to honor outstanding work in the field of animal welfare, including animal sheltering and animal control. This year’s ceremony was held March 28, 2014.
