REPEAT OFFENDER RETURNS TO PRISON
UPPERVILLE MAN SENTENCED FOR DRIVING OFFENSES

LEESBURG, Virginia – September 12, 2014. Steven M. Edwards, 32, appeared before Judge Benjamin N. A. Kendrick in Loudoun County Circuit Court for sentencing on one count of driving while intoxicated, 3rd offense within five years, and one count of driving on a suspended operator’s license. Kendrick imposed an active sentence of three years in the Virginia Department of Corrections for the driving while intoxicated offense and an additional twelve months for the driving on suspended charge.

In the early morning hours of February 23, 2014, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a 7-11 in Sterling. Upon their arrival, deputies observed an SUV located up a grassy embankment where it appeared that the driver had driven off the roadway and become stuck. The driver of the vehicle was incoherent, unable to keep his eyes open, and unable to control himself. Deputies had to break a rear window of the vehicle to make entry. Upon breaking the window, a strong odor of alcohol and PCP emanated from the vehicle. Subsequent investigation revealed that the defendant had been smoking a cigarette dipped in PCP while he was driving.

In addition to the total active sentence, Kendrick imposed a $1,000 mandatory fine and three years of post release supervision. Post release supervision conditions are established by the Virginia Parole Board prior to a felon’s release from incarceration. Failure to comply with those conditions can be grounds to terminate the remaining period of post release supervision and return the offender to incarceration

Edward’s has an extensive adult criminal record which includes convictions for four prior felony offenses and eight prior misdemeanor offenses. Additionally, Edwards had repeated criminal contact with the juvenile court system.
