JUDGE UPHOLDS JURY SENTENCE
15 YEARS IMPOSED FOR SEX OFFENDER
LEESBURG, Virginia – December 15, 2014. Geovanni Amilcar Benitez-Giron, 38, appeared before the Circuit Court of Loudoun County, in custody, for sentencing on one count of rape.
Judge Stephen E. Sincavage upheld an August jury verdict, which fixed the sentence for Benitez-Giron to 15 years in the Virginia Department of Corrections. Additionally, Sincavage imposed a three year period of post-release supervision, and directed that Benitez-Giron successfully complete a sex offender treatment program.
During the course of the multi-day jury trial in August, 2014, Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Gigi Lawless called nine witnesses to testify on behalf of the Commonwealth. The evidence included testimony from the victim, first responders and a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner as well as forensics and expert opinion related to the collection of DNA. The jury deliberated for approximately one hour before returning with a guilty verdict.
Pursuant to Virginia’s Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry Act, Benitez-Giron will be required to register as a violent sex offender.
