STERLING MAN CONVICTED OF MOB ASSAULT

JURY FIXES SENTENCE AT TWENTY-FIVE YEARS THREE CO-DEFENDANTS PLEAD GUILTY

LEESBURG, Virginia – March 26, 2015. A Loudoun County jury found Juan Carlos Reyes, 19, guilty of malicious wounding by mob and aggravated malicious wounding. Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Eric Shamis presented the case on behalf of the Commonwealth. After two days of evidence and deliberations, the jury ultimately found Reyes guilty and fixed his punishment at twenty-five years.

On the night of August 23, 2014, a Sterling man received a phone call from an acquaintance and subsequently began walking through Sterling to meet the him at a pre-determined location. Once the man arrived at the location he was surrounded by Reyes, Wilber Escobar, 19, Marcos Antonio Guevara, 22, and Adonis Soriano, 19. Escobar shoved the man to the ground, put a gun to his head, demanded money, and asked what gang the victim belonged to. When the man refused to comply, Reyes stabbed him in the chest while the other men encouraged the attack. The victim was able to flee the scene and was transported to the hospital.

As a result of the injuries, the victim was required to undergo surgery to alleviate internal bleeding. While recovering in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, the victim was able to identify Reyes, Escobar, Guevara, and Soriano from a photo line-up. The four men were subsequently arrested.

During the sentencing phase of the trial, Shamis presented evidence of Reyes’ prior criminal record which included a 2015 felony conviction for breaking and entering. Reyes also had repeated contact with the juvenile court system.

Reyes’ case is currently set for July 27, 2015 in Circuit Court where a final sentencing hearing will be held before the Hon. Burke F. McCahill who presided over the trial. Under Virginia law, a judge may suspend any amount of a jury sentence, except for any portion that is a statutory “mandatory minimum,” by providing written reasons therefore. A jury sentence may not be increased by a judge.

On December 8, 2014, December 22, 2014 and January 21, 2015, Escobar, Guevara and Soriano each plead guilty to unlawful wounding respectively for their roles in the attack. Escobar and Guevara are scheduled to be sentenced on April 10, 2015. Soriano is scheduled to be sentenced on April 14, 2015.
