[ARCHIVED] Loudoun County Kicks off Adopt a Shelter Cat Campaign

To celebrate the long history of the relationship between humans and cats, Loudoun County is launching a cat adoption campaign which will feature photographs of cats from the Loudoun County Animal Shelter with notable friends, such as Board of Supervisors Chairman Scott K. York.

The campaign, “Adopt Your Piece of History – Adopt a Shelter Cat” will run through October and is aimed at encouraging residents to add a feline to their or to become involved in their community in an effort to improve the lives of cats.

The Department of Animal Services also announces the creation of the Loudoun Community Cat Coalition, whose purpose is to assist Loudoun County’s animal welfare community addressing the hundreds of requests received each year regarding community and feral cats. Community cats live outdoors and are not socialized to people. While they are the same species as the domesticated cats that people have as pets, they have not lived with people and are therefore not ideal as indoor pet companions.

The Loudoun Community Cat Coalition consists of representatives from a variety of Loudoun County and regional organizations. In addition to the Loudoun County Department of Animal Services, members include Caring Hands Animal Support and Education (CHASE), Humane Society of Loudoun County, Loudoun County Animal Services, Towne Animal Clinic, Virginia Veterinary Medical Association, Loudoun County Veterinary Medical Association and Alley Cat Allies.

The coalition is hosting a free Community Cat Education Class designed to provide information about community cats, safe and effective trapping techniques, community cat care and best practices. The class will be held at Loudoun County Animal Services, 39820 Charles Town Pike, Waterford, on Wednesday May 6, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. Please RSVP for the class to LCAS Assistant Director of Programs and Services Amy Martin at Amy.Martin@loudoun.gov or by phone at 703-737-8097.
