Robert S. Wertz Jr., Loudoun’s Commissioner of the Revenue, announces that his office will end DMV Select Services on June 30, 2016. Wertz recently provided the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) notification of his intent not to renew his agreement to maintain a License Agency of DMV (DMV Select) in his Leesburg and Sterling offices when it expires on June 30, 2016. Wertz commented that “DMV workload has increased substantially, diverting resources from our primary role as tax assessors.”

DMV Select workload has increased 50% since Fiscal Year 2014 and over 500% since 2006 when these services were first offered, with the most significant increases over the last two years. Wertz does not anticipate that this growth will abate. “These services, which a Commissioner of the Revenue is not mandated to provide, were originally envisioned to complement our local vehicle registration process where a resident could register for personal property taxes, get state license plates and save a trip to DMV,” said Wertz. However, this increased workload has strained his limited resources. Therefore, without additional staff Wertz concluded he would not be able to continue these added services.

DMV presently has two customer service centers serving Loudoun residents in Leesburg and Sterling. Wertz said he has been provided assurance from DMV that its DMV 2 Go mobile customer service center will continue to visit his Sterling office, according to its regular schedule, so that customers will still have access to convenient DMV service in the area. DMV will also be reevaluating service options in Loudoun County in order to provide residents with the high standard of local service to which they are accustomed. “I appreciate the opportunity to have worked with DMV to provide Loudouners with DMV services in my offices for almost 10 years,” said Wertz.

Wertz pledges to work with DMV and the county’s Public Affairs and Communications Office to formulate a communications plan to adequately inform citizens of this change. In the meantime, DMV Select services will continue as usual. Loudoun citizens should be advised that DMV services such as vehicle registration renewal, driver/vehicle records requests, driver’s license renewal, and plate purchases may all be done online.
