[ARCHIVED] Change to Personal Property Tax Relief Qualifications for 2017 Regarding Pickup Trucks

Robert S. Wertz, Jr., Loudoun’s Commissioner of the Revenue, wants truck owners to know that due to recently enacted legislation, trucks with a gross weight between 7,501 and 10,000 pounds may qualify for Personal Property Tax Relief (PPTR) from the Commonwealth of Virginia beginning in calendar year 2017.

During the 2016 Virginia General Assembly session, registration and license plate requirements for personal use trucks were changed. Beginning January 1, 2017, personal use trucks with a registered gross weight up to 10,000 pounds may qualify for PPTR if the vehicle is registered with DMV as a pickup and displays standard passenger vehicle license plates. Business-use vehicles or those displaying truck license plates are not eligible for PPTR.

If your personal use vehicle has a gross weight between 7,501 and 10,000 pounds, it must be registered with DMV as a pickup and have standard passenger vehicle license plates to qualify for personal property tax relief in 2017. You may verify your vehicle is properly registered and is therefore eligible for PPTR qualification by contacting DMV by phone at 804-497-7100 or by visiting your local DMV customer service center.

This legislative change does not apply to vehicles owned by a business or that are used for business purposes. If your truck is registered for business use, no action on your part is required.

For further information concerning PPTR qualification requirements, please visit or contact the Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue by email or phone at 703-777-0260.  You may also stop by the Leesburg office in the Loudoun County Government Center at 1 Harrison Street, S.E. or the Sterling office at 21641 Ridgetop Circle. Regular office hours are weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
