ELLIS CONVICTED OF FELONY HOMICIDE AND CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT

JURY FIXES SENTENCE AT THIRTEEN YEARS

LEESBURG, Virginia – March 23, 2017. A seven day trial ended this morning with a jury finding Diamante Travon Ellis, 24, guilty of felony homicide and child abuse and neglect in the 2014 death of his nine month old daughter.

The child was initially taken by Ellis and his grandfather to INOVA Loudoun Hospital’s Cornwall Campus on October 2, 2014, where she was unresponsive and airlifted to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. for treatment. A representative from the Children’s National Medical Center contacted Loudoun County Child Protective Services based on suspicious injuries to the child.

The child was removed from life support on October 5, 2014. An autopsy conducted by the District of Columbia’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the official cause of death to be blunt impact head trauma with subdural hemorrhage.

Over the course of the trial, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorneys Donald P. Goodman III and Eric M. Shamis constructed a case that included a recorded interview between Ellis and Leesburg Police Department detectives, and witness testimony including scientific and medical experts.

The jury deliberated during the sentencing phase for approximately three hours before returning a sentence of eight years in prison for felony homicide and five years for child abuse and neglect. The case will be back in Circuit Court again on May 31, 2017 where a final sentencing hearing will be conducted before the Hon. Jeanette A. Irby who presided over the multi-day trial.
