On Saturday, May 18, 2019, Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) will host the fourth annual “Homeward Bound” free pet adoption event from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Adoption fees will be waived on all available cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, small pets and reptiles. In addition to adoptions, LCAS will host a “Meet the ACO” session from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. for kids of all ages to meet with an Animal Control Officer (ACO), see an officer’s truck and learn how they help pets and wildlife. The Friends of Loudoun County Animal Services group will be holding a raffle and provide free engraved name tags to all pets adopted that day. The event takes place at the Loudoun County Animal Shelter, 39820 Charles Town Pike, Waterford.
“There is nothing better than coming to the shelter in the morning and seeing people lined up to adopt a new best friend,” says Shelter Operations Manager Amy Martin. “People wait for price drops on everything from homes to wedding dresses, so it makes sense that they keep an eye out for free adoption events to find a beloved pet too. We can’t wait to send our pets out to loving families at Homeward Bound.”
In an effort to help as many pets as possible, LCAS will be receiving up to twenty dogs and cats from overcrowded shelters in the region and all will be up for adoption in addition to local shelter animals looking for homes. Adoption fees at LCAS typically range from $25 to $175, but no adoption fees will be charged during the one-day event.
In lieu of adoption, those wishing to help homeless pets can bring donated items. With “kitten season” running from May to October, LCAS is most in need of powdered kitten milk replacer, kitten bottles/nursing kits, and cat collars. There is also a need for dog collars and leashes, chew toys, puzzle feeders and tasty treats for all types of pets.
All dogs and cats adopted from LCAS are spayed or neutered, have age-appropriate vaccinations, and receive a microchip which is registered to their adopter. The shelter frequently has many pets available for adoption including hamsters, guinea pigs, reptiles, rabbits, other small pets and livestock. Potential adopters can view available pets online at loudoun.gov/animals. The standard adoption screening process still applies during this promotion and most adoptions can be completed on the same day.
