[ARCHIVED] Improvements Set for Intersection of Elk Lick Road and Tall Cedars Parkway

Loudoun County is notifying motorists of upcoming changes to the intersection of Tall Cedars Parkway and Elk Lick Road in South Riding. Work on a roadway improvement project at the intersection is scheduled to occur Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21, 2019, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. each day.  Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes during this time due to multiple lane closures at the intersection.

The scheduled construction is the first phase of a two-phase project to improve safety at the intersection by allowing right turns only from Elk Lick Road in both directions onto Tall Cedars Parkway.  Stop signs on Tall Cedars Parkway and the existing pavement markings will be removed, and flex posts will be installed to prevent Elk Lick Road traffic from crossing Tall Cedars or making left turns.

The second and last phase of the roadway improvement project, scheduled for completion in 2020, is to install a permanent median structure in place of flex posts installed during the interim phase.

Studies performed at the intersection have determined that permanently restricting through-traffic on Elk Lick Road is the best way to improve safety by diverting traffic from Route 50 to alternate routes. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the county will continue to monitor the median restrictions at the intersection to determine if additional changes are required.

Loudoun County is funding the project with the work being performed by VDOT.

If weather conditions prevent the start of construction on July 20, the work will take place the following weekend on Saturday, July 27, and Sunday, July 28.  Message boards have been placed at the intersection to provide updates throughout the project.
