Loudoun County has again been recognized as one of the most technologically advanced county governments in the United States. Loudoun is ranked among the top ten in its population category in a national survey conducted by the Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties.

The 2020 Digital Counties Survey identifies the best technology practices among U.S. counties, including initiatives that streamline delivery of government services, encourage open data, collaboration and shared services, enhance cybersecurity and contribute to disaster response and recovery efforts. Loudoun is one of 53 counties in the nation highlighted in the survey for “utilizing technology and data to better serve their citizens, respond quickly to citizen needs around COVID-19 and support digital experience initiatives.”

Led by the Department of Information Technology, Loudoun County continues to seek innovative ways to deliver services efficiently. Examples highlighted in the survey include:

  • Broadband Expansion: The Loudoun County government has partnered with Loudoun County Public Schools to expand broadband fiber to all Loudoun County government and school facilities, which will significantly improve the availability of broadband in western Loudoun and will provide a robust fiber network to meet the ever increasing bandwidth needs of the entire county.
  • COVID-19 Response: Loudoun County has used a number of digital tools to communicate with residents and businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the county website, the Alert Loudoun text and email system and the county’s social media sites. In addition, the GIS capabilities of GeoHub has been leveraged to provide geospatial resources, including maps, interactive applications and other data relevant to COVID-19 in Loudoun County. The county is also well positioned in regards to bandwidth and infrastructure to support the technology needs for increased telework by county employees.
  • Cybersecurity: Loudoun County continues to place a high priority on the issue of cybersecurity. The Department of Information Technology has instituted a new integrated process that includes a standardized risk assessment for all new technologies as well as enhancements to existing technologies and services. In addition, the county regularly collaborates with state and regional partners on cybersecurity efforts.
  • Modernizing Physical Infrastructure: Loudoun County is in the final stages of completing the infrastructure modernization detailed in the Technology Roadmap adopted in 2019. The roadmap describes the shift of the county’s server and storage architecture from older, in-house facilities to commercial data centers in Loudoun.
