The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors will consider revisions to the county’s K-6 Distance Learning Child Care Program at the Board’s next business meeting, which begins at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 15, 2020.

The program was developed to support working parents who have an unexpected need for child care this fall due to the Loudoun County Public Schools’ (LCPS) decision to begin the 2020-2021 school year with all distance learning. On September 1, the Board approved a program that would serve approximately 1,000 – 1,200 children at up to 22 sites throughout the county that included elementary schools, community and recreation centers, libraries and leased buildings. The county’s plan was based on surveys of parents in the community who expressed a significant need for the service.

Following the launch of the child care program this week with lower enrollment than expected, the Board directed staff to reevaluate the program and propose changes. The proposed changes to the program include:

  • Capping the number of children in the program at 600. This would eliminate the need for the use of library and community and recreation center locations. (Because the Ashburn and Rust libraries are not needed for the program now, they will reopen to the public Friday, September 11, 2020.)
  • Reducing program fees. The proposed new monthly rate for the full-day program is 70% of the current rate; the proposed new monthly rate for the school day program is 50% of the current rate.
  • Increasing the flexibility of the program by offering it for two or three days a week in addition to the current five-day program.

The details of the proposed changes to the program are included in the staff report that is published online (PDF) as part of the September 15 meeting packet. The Board is scheduled to vote on the proposed changes Tuesday evening.

Registration for the K-6 Distance Learning Child Care Program continues on a rolling basis. Parents who are interested in the service may find program details and a link to register at loudoun.gov/DLchildcare

The Board’s September 15 business meeting will take place in the Board Room of the Loudoun County Government Center, 1 Harrison Street SE, in Leesburg. Capacity in the meeting room is currently limited due to physical distancing requirements for COVID-19 prevention; however, members of the public are encouraged to view the meetings on TV or online. The meetings will be televised on Comcast Government Channel 23, Open Band Channel 40 and Verizon FiOS Channel 40 and livestreamed at loudoun.gov/meetings
