Loudoun Firefighters Go Virtual For “Fire Prevention Month”

FPM 2020 NF

The Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System (LC-CFRS) members always strive to provide effective, consistent, and readily accessible fire and life safety education for Loudoun residents year-round. Annually we designate October as Fire Prevention Month, and LC-CFRS first responders and community outreach specialists dedicate additional time and resources to increase community awareness about preventing home fires. As we kick off Fire Prevention Month in Loudoun County, LC-CFRS members will introduce our residents to the virtual “Super Safe Loudoun” program which includes interactive and innovative educational activities that focus on critical fire prevention measures.

This year’s fire prevention campaign, “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!” works to teach our citizens simple, yet important, fire safety precautions to stay safe at home. In 2019, US fire departments responded to 264,500 home fires that killed 2,390 civilians. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires and fire injuries.

In October of 2020, in place of our traditional open house events, the “Super Safe Loudoun” virtual program will include many new activities, videos and materials specifically targeting children, adults, and special populations. You and your family can have fun while learning about the importance of smoke alarms, home escape planning, cooking safety and much more from the safety of your home. The Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO) has also created a virtual version of the “Fired Up for Safety” first grade educational curriculum. Throughout the month of October, the FMO will work with Loudoun County Public School teachers and administrators to deliver the virtual program to Loudoun County first grade students.

To access the “Super Safe Loudoun” virtual materials, you can follow us on LC-CFRS official social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Next Door for frequent posts or you may visit the following webpage to select from various activities at any time.

For additional information on October 2020 Fire Prevention Month activities, please contact the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office Public Education Manager, Lisa Braun, at 703-737-8600 or by email.
